Remembering all your passwords can be a tough job. We don’t blame you; there are so many password protected sites and PIN-protected accounts these days that anyone who can remember all their passwords should be awarded, honestly! And this difficulty is exactly what leads many people to use the same password for multiple accounts or use passwords that are so simple that they can be easily hacked. If you are one of the many people, you’d better read on:

First off, let’s talk about the warning signs that indicate that your account has been hacked:

  • You can’t log into your email account.
  • You spot messages in your “Sent folder” you have never sent.
  • You get info from your email contacts that they’ve been receiving spam messages from your account

Have you spotted any of these warning signs? It’s time to change your passwords then. Just don’t forget to stick by these guidelines in order to decrease the chances of your accounts being hacked into (again!):

  • Use special characters and numbers. Mixing up uppercase and lowercase letters is a good idea too. Just compare this fact : It takes 0.00001 seconds for someone to hack into your account if you have the password “abc” while it takes a hacker 206.5 years to hack an account with the password “AbC#1&2&3&”, where special characters and numbers have been mixed up. Also notice how both uppercase and lowercase letters have been used.
  • It’s better to have passwords that are 10 characters long (or more).
  • Using your ZIP code, phone number, birth date or name is a big NO-NO; they can be guessed easily.
  • Doing something as simple as replacing letters with characters can give you a lot more protection. For example, you may write shake as $h@ke.
  • Pick a sentence or phrase, and then reduce it to first letters of each word only. For example, if you choose the sentence “A Golden Key Can Open Any Door”, it becomes AGKCOAD.
  • Try reversing the spelling of a word.

Stay safe!
