People shop and do business online every day without giving much thought to the security of the information they’re sharing. They trust that the companies they’re patronizing have implemented the proper security measures to protect customers’ or clients’ personal information. So, the Canadian government established the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) to “support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances. …”

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has created the Processing Personal Data Across Borders Guidelines to help businesses throughout Canada understand PIPEDA and how it works. The guidelines explain, for instance, that under Principle 1 of PIPEDA, you and your organization are responsible for the safety and security of any and all personal information that’s transferred to third-party organizations, both foreign and domestic, for processing. If you outsource tasks such as payment processing to third-party organizations, for example, then you’re going to want to download the OPC’s guidelines. But outsourcing companies aren’t the only ones that are subject to PIPEDA.
