People shop and do business online every day without giving much thought to the security of the information they’re sharing. So, the Canadian government established the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) to “support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances. …”

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has created the Processing Personal Data Across Borders Guidelines to help businesses throughout Canada understand PIPEDA and how it works. The guidelines explain, for instance, that under Principle 1 of PIPEDA, you and your organization are responsible for the safety and security of any and all personal information that’s transferred to third-party organizations, both foreign and domestic, for processing.
