Looks like Google sees something in the email security services market that the rest of the world doesn’t. As the enterprise network traffic shifts rapidly from email accounts to social networks, the internet giant has announced that it is no longer going to be in the security business but will continue to filter email from spam, at least for now.

When Google entered the security business back in 2007 with its Postini purchase worth $625 million, it established itself as a provider of enterprise and midmarket email security services. This move by Google gave security titans such as Symantec and Trend Micro a run for their money and prompted Symantec to buy MessageLabs and Cisco to push its IronPort email security to the cloud. To stay in the competition, McAfee, too, acquired the assets of email security pioneer Cipher Trust when it bought Secure Computing. Fast forward to 2011, Google announces the discontinuation of Google Web Security, which is the successor to the Postini business, along with 9 other products as part of a major portfolio reshuffle. Other products to go with the slash are social search tool Aardvark, Google Desktop, Fast Flip, Notebook, Subscribed Links, Sidewiki and Google Pack. Existing users of Google Web Security (which amounts to 26 million), however, need not worry. Though Google will no longer sell the service, it says it will continue to support for existing users.

In 2007, it wasn’t all about Postini acquisition since Google also bought Green Border that year; Green Border is a company that specializes in sandboxing technology that protects users against Web browser threats. This made it look like Google was aiming to diversify its offerings and become a real security player. However, as things continue to unravel, it appears that the Postini and Green Border acquisitions weren’t about establishing itself as a security provider for Google; it was about  assimilation too. Many of Postini’s features have been incorporated into other Google products and so have Green Border’s.

Google’s Postini acquisition has been more than mere security and assimilation as it has also given Google the first semblance of a channel. Google did have a fledgling channel prior to the acquisition but it dealt mostly with OEM partners for integrating its search appliance with enterprise business applications. Postini’s reseller channel, however, gave Google insights and infrastructure tailored toward indirect sales.

The only thing to see now is how this is going to affect the email security services market.  According to our connections inside Google, Postini isn’t going anywhere right away and it is business as normal.
